Setting the Framework

Base Coat Setting Up

Mesh Embedded at the Corner

Pulling the Straight Edge
The action shot — a long straight edge (darby rule) being drawn across the base coat to rule it up flat and level. This is how the base coat is brought to a consistent thickness across the full elevation — any high spots are knocked back, any low spots filled. This is the skill. Working Out the Air
This is a critical but rarely photographed stage. After the base coat is ruled flat, a serrated scratcher is worked across the full surface — those marks you can see are the result. Polymer-modified base coats trap air during mixing and application; if left, those pockets blow as the coat cures, creating blisters and voids in the surface. The serrated edge breaks the skin and releases every trapped air bubble before they become a problem. Once the air is out, the surface is spat flat — closed back up with a float to give a tight, dense, bubble-free base. Skip this stage and you risk a surface that blisters and fails. It's not glamorous, but it's the kind of detail that separates a system that lasts 25 years from one that doesn't make 5.
Side Elevation — Ruled Up Flat
